Black Feminism & Hip Hop: A Study of the Woman Emcee

Hip-Hop is one of America’s thriving music genres. For decades Hip-Hop has had great influence on popular culture and is quickly becoming a popular topic in academia. Popular rap stars such as Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Tupac, etc have become household names with their rags to riches narratives, but what about the women in Hip-Hop?

This course is designed to teach successful college writing skills while closely analyzing the plight of the woman emcee. Students will read, discuss, and critique a variety of readings requiring them to apply critical thinking skills. In this course, we will explore the multiple forms of oppression women endure in a male-dominated art form. Students will form written responses for each week’s reading, and after drafting, editing, and revising students will organize a final research paper.
